Sellers and Buyers: "who are you?"

Postby Site Admin » Mon Dec 13, 2004 7:06 pm

In case you are new to the world of on-line selling and buying, a word of warning: try to know who you are dealing with.

Although there have been absolutely no cases of fraud brought to our attention, related to any transactions on the Americade message boards, there are some unscrupulous persons out there in cyber-land.

Below are some tips for sellers which I clipped from another board. They may save you some heartache :( or embarrassment  some time.

Protection.
- If it is a cashier's check, ensure that it is legitimate. Call the bank who issued the check and verify the funds are avail, and that this is indeed a cashier's check.
- Place money in escrow account at a bank to ensure that it is safe until released.
- Don't accept more than your product is worth and then "refund" the difference between the "check" and your bike. Wait until a regular check has cleared (usually 10 days) before shipping.
- If by e-mail, ask for phone numbers, address, etc. Do a phone # search to make sure the address is a land line (don't accept a cell number). Call the carrier to verify that the number is to a real person at that location.
- Google their e-mail address and name to see if they have hit up others. "Google groups" is another good location to search.
- Ship COD with no check accepted (cash only)
- Meet the person face to face

Yes, that is excellent advice, and since we are mostly all 'Caders the best bet to avoid any "scammers" is simply to meet up at Americade to exchange the goods.
