Trimming the membership roles...

Postby WCLamb » Sat Apr 20, 2019 11:23 am

For those who continue to visit this site: Many newcomers have tried to register in the last couple of years -- to post a message or link on the Americade message boards. The majority of those applicants have been bogus, either coming from Asia and Eastern Europe or some other parts of the world... many are people who have no relationship with Americade and simply want to post a link to some unrelated website of theirs (either for some unknown, unrelated product) or to a pornographic website. That is not in keeping with the spirit of this family-oriented website.

As an administrator, I have been unable to remove those bogus individuals, either because of computer glitches or software issues. Currently the number of new applications stands at more than 28,000. Many of those requests are generated by "bots" that automatically search for similar software to the "phpbb" software employed by the Americade message boards. In this manner they can spread their links to their preferred websites.

In addition, there are registrants who joined the message boards since the new "phpbb" software was installed in late October of 2003, but who have NEVER posted a message here. In all likelihood, they will NEVER submit a post, or reply to a question, find a riding companion, or contribute in any manner.

I intend to remove those bogus new member requests going back several years. I will also delete "active" members going back to the early 2004s who have never used their membership/access to post a single message. So, if you are considered an active member (are able to log in to these message boards) and have NEVER posted a message, I would urge you to do so ASAP. In order for these message boards to be effective, I must clean up the membership roles to include only those people who have taken part in the conversations. Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks for all you do WC, it's thankless and time consuming work, for me the sad part is that this site does not have many active participants, can literally be a couple weeks with no new posts. In the early days of the website, lots of people were posting looking for rooms; they filled fast then and vacancies were scarce, places to eat etc., having a lively website helped build the anticipation of Americade.

Again, thanks WC, I know it would be more rewarding if more people were participating

Yes Thank you!
I too miss the old days of Americade and the old form!
It seam like none of it's the same anymore.
Once would come here many times a day, now almost never.
See you in a few weeks,
Jim Moore

Cherrie - NO need to worry. I am only going to delete those who have never been approved or have never posted a message.
Right now, nothing is deleting per my instructions, so it might take me a while to get rid of the excess...

WC
thanx for all you do, the old days where the best, the board was hummin, there was always someone there to answer a question re: rooms, eats, rides, tours, ect.
It was good seeing you last year @ the Studio, I won't be going this year, heading up to Laconia instead, never been there, so we'll give it a try,
stay well, ride safe, see ya on the road..

...NOT an easy task, but after a half a lifetime's worth of frustration, I was finally able to pare down the membership number to 1,683 from the 28,000 plus who either were registered but never posted, or among all the "bot-generated" bogus folks who were in queue for membership but won't be added until they can justify joining membership. Hopefully, I didn't eliminate anyone who had a legitimate reason to be here! If I made an error, I apologize. You may try to re-join and I'll evaluate/correspond and re-add you if warranted.

Hello Message Board Members!

Thank you for bringing it our attention that there was a glitch in the back end of the message board following our clean out of spam inquiries. We have redirected the Forum link around the error page that is telling people they are permanently banned so you should still be able to log in and access everything. Our web team is looking into why this is happening now that we have been made aware of the error. We appreciate your patience while they work through the issue.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions - we are available in office Monday - Friday 9AM-5PM EST!
